Testing the level of complement component C4 in the blood. Study useful in the diagnosis of acquired and congenital deficiencies of the complement system complement system.

The cause of an increase in complement component levels is usually due to infection. Decreased concentrations are caused by decreased production (due to congenital deficiency of complement components or liver disease) or increased consumption (e.g., due to activation by circulating immune complexes).

Decreased C4 levels are an indicator of the activity of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
