Very long-chain fatty acids
Clinical relevance
The determination of very long-chain fatty acids (VLCFA) has applications in the diagnosis and monitoring of peroxisomal diseases. Peroxisomes are organelles found in every human cell, in whichóa number of biochemical reactions take place, including the process of oxidation of fatty acids to acetyl-coenzyme A. Errors in the pathways of biochemical metabolism lead to diseasesób manifested by severe clinical symptoms. Because lipids are essential to the normal functioning of the nervous system, most peroxisomal diseases are accompanied by symptoms resulting mainly from damage to both the central and peripheral nervous systems.
