Magnesium Level in the Body – Test Description

The magnesium level test measures the concentration of this element in the serum. A blood sample is typically taken from a vein in the crook of the arm and then analyzed in the laboratory.

Magnesium Level Test – Indications

The magnesium blood level test is often performed when symptoms suggestive of a deficiency or excess of magnesium appear. Common symptoms include:

  • muscle tension and cramps,
  • eyelid twitching,
  • feelings of anxiety or irritability.

Doctors also order this test as part of preventive care, especially for patients with heart or kidney diseases, or those taking medications that may affect magnesium levels. Magnesium levels are also measured along with other electrolytes, such as total calcium, to get a full picture of the body's mineral balance.

People dealing with type 2 diabetes, diseases associated with diarrhea or absorption disorders (e.g. celiac disease, Crohn's disease), alcoholism, or those taking medications that reduce magnesium levels in the body should particularly ensure proper magnesium levels.

How is the Magnesium Test Performed?

The magnesium test is performed using a blood sample.

  • The test involves drawing blood into an EDTA tube, following the procedure of disinfecting the skin, applying a tourniquet, and maintaining pressure at the puncture site for a few minutes after the procedure is completed.
  • The blood collection takes about a few to several seconds.
  • If the test is not properly prepared for, the results may not be fully reliable.
  • The blood collection should be done in the morning hours.

How to Prepare for the Magnesium Test?

The day before the test:

  • Avoid consuming large, fatty meals and alcohol for 24 hours before the test.
  • Avoid drinking coffee and tea for at least 12 hours before the test.

On the day of the test:

  • Fast – this means refrain from eating for about 8–12 hours before the test.
  • A small amount of water may be consumed in the morning.
  • If possible, the blood sample should be collected before taking the morning dose of any medication, unless your doctor advises otherwise.
  • The blood collection should be done in the morning hours.
  • Try to remain at rest for 10–15 minutes before the test (sitting position).
  • Physical exertion, even moderate, such as walking or climbing stairs, can alter the laboratory test results.

Magnesium Test Results

Test results for magnesium levels can be collected in various ways depending on the facility where the test was performed. Detailed information on how to receive results at specific locations is available directly at the testing points or on their websites.
