Glucose in urine
The test involves the detection of glucose in a daily collection of urine.
Physiologically, glucose is resorbed in the renal tubules and undetected in the urine. Glucosuria usually occurs in conditions, accompanied by an elevated blood glucose concentration as a result of exceeding the so-called renal threshold, i.e. the kidney's ability to resorption of glucose, with serum concentrations above 180 mg/dl In addition to diabetes, the appearance of glucose in the urine occurs in certain endocrine disorders - acromegaly, Cushing's disease Cushing's disease, as well as in pregnancy, stress and with excessive intake of carbohydrates in the diet (alimentary glucosuria).
Glucose in urine can also be detected despite its normal serum levels in so-called renal diabetes mellitus. This is a congenital or acquired defect in glucose reabsorption in the proximal tubules caused by a reduced number of receptors (type A) or reduced affinity of the transport system for glucose (type B).
