Potassium
The determination of potassium in blood serum plays an extremely important role when monitoring the state of your health. Potassium is an element responsible for maintaining the balance of water-electrolyte and acid-base. Its deficiency can affect, for example, the weakness of the body or tingling of the limbs.

Serum Potassium – Test Description
A test that determines the level of potassium in the blood is designed to evaluate electrolyte balance. Potassium is essential for the proper functioning of cells, especially regarding nerve conduction and muscle contraction. The test is performed for heart or liver diseases and in diagnosing pathological conditions such as kidney dysfunction or hormonal imbalances.
When Should You Test Potassium Levels in the Blood? Indications
The serum potassium test is particularly recommended in cases of chronic vomiting and diarrhea, as well as in situations such as:
-
general weakness,
-
muscle cramps,
-
heart rhythm disorders,
-
suspected kidney failure,
-
monitoring kidney diseases, hypertension, diabetes, or diuretic therapy.
Avoid drinking coffee and tea for at least 12 hours before the test.
How to Prepare for a Potassium Test?
-
Avoid heavy and fatty meals as well as alcohol for 24 hours before the test.
-
Do not consume food for 12 hours before the test.
-
Drinking a small amount of water in the morning is allowed.
How Is the Potassium Test Conducted?
The blood sample should be taken in the morning. Before the test, the patient should rest for 10–15 minutes in a seated position. Blood is collected into an EDTA tube from a non-compressed blood vessel. This eliminates the risk of cell breakdown and the release of cellular potassium, which could falsify the results. The test usually takes 15–30 seconds.
Serum Potassium – Test Results
For such an important mineral as potassium, normal values range from 3.5 to 5.0 mmol/L. These may vary depending on the laboratory, as different reference values might be presented depending on the method used.
If the result falls within the specified range, it indicates normal electrolyte balance. For values above or below the normal range, consulting a doctor to discuss the test results is recommended.
-
When potassium levels exceed the norm (referred to as hyperkalemia), the most common causes include kidney failure, dehydration, diabetes, heart failure, adrenal insufficiency (e.g., Addison's disease), certain medications (e.g., angiotensin inhibitors), or liver diseases.
-
When potassium levels are below the normal range, indicating hypokalemia, it may point to significant water loss related to alcohol or coffee consumption or chronic diarrhea and vomiting.
