Protein C (PC) Activity Test - Blood Clotting Assessment
The Protein C (PC) activity test evaluates the function of Protein C, which is crucial for controlling blood clotting. A deficiency can lead to an increased risk of thrombosis. This test aids in the diagnosis of clotting disorders.
When to Perform the Test?
The test is performed to diagnose acquired and congenital Protein C deficiencies, including in cases of venous thromboembolism.
Disease Entities
Protein C (PC) activity is tested in the diagnosis of conditions involving reduced PC activity: congenital PC deficiency, acquired PC deficiency (acute thrombosis), oral anticoagulant therapy, vitamin K deficiency, liver diseases, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), sepsis, and anti-Protein C antibodies.
Symptoms
Protein C (PC) activity testing is performed upon observing symptoms of deep vein thrombosis, such as calf pain (worsening with walking), tenderness in the lower limb upon pressure, swelling, and increased warmth of the lower limb. It is also conducted when symptoms associated with pulmonary embolism are observed, including severe shortness of breath, chest pain, bluish discoloration of the skin and mucous membranes, fever, hemoptysis, and loss of consciousness.
