Echinococcal IgG antibodies met. Western blot
Clinical significance
Echinococcosis is a zoonotic disease caused by the larvae of the echinococcusóworms: Echinococcus granulosus and Echinococcus multilocularis. Echinococcosis caused by Echinococcus granulosus runs most often with lesions in the liver (about 60%), less often in the lungs (about 20%), and occasionally in the kidneys, muscles, spleen, soft tissues, mózgu or bones, in which the echinococcus, growing slowly, may not produce any symptoms for many years. In the liver, a thick envelope develops around the parasite, whichós pressure on the genital tract can cause, among other things, jaundice. If an echinococcal blister ruptures, anaphylactic shock and dissemination of the parasite can occur. When localized in the lungs, there is coughing, shortness of breath and painóle in the chest. Echinococcus multilocularis does not produce an envelope in the liver and lungs, making it spread in a way that infiltrates tissues and mimics the neoplastic process, and there is often a rapidly progressive cachexia.Western Blot antibody detection is a confirmatory test for previously positive serologic findings.
