Bodies against Treponema pallidum (pale spirochete) by Western Blot
Clinical significance
Determination of specific IgM antibodies against Treponema pallidum, the pale spirochete that causes syphilis. Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease; infection through mucous membranes, blood or kissing is also possible. In addition, there is congenital syphilis, where infection occurs in the womb. Determination of specific IgM antibodies by Western Blot is characterized by high sensitivity and specificity. Any positive (and doubtful) IgM (and IgG) determination by ELISA must be verified, for example, by Western Blot to exclude false positives.
