Treponema pallidum DNA
Clinical significance
A test that detects the genetic material of the pale spirochete (Treponema pallidum), which causes syphilis. Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease; infection through mucous membranes, blood or kissing is also possible. Congenital syphilis is also detected when infection occurs in the womb. Determination of spirochete DNA is a highly sensitive and specific test. Examination of móspinal fluid is not indicated in early syphilis.
