P/Saccharomyces cerevisiae IgA antibodies
Clinical significance
Assaying antibodies against Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast (ASCA) is used in the ró¿nationalization of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Both disease entities belong to the group of inflammatory bowel disease and are difficult to ródifferentiate, as they have similar symptoms. The use of ASCA and ANCA (perinuclear anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodiesów) antibody assays allows for non-invasive diagnosis of both conditions. ASCA antibodies are characteristic of Crohn's disease, while ANCA antibodies are characteristic of ulcerative colitis. ASCA antibodies in the IgA class are present in about 35% of patients.
