X-rays are a type of electromagnetic waves that penetrate the obstacles on their way. Once the X-ray source is directed at the right body part, a beam of rays is sent, penetrating the skin, internal organs and bones. The particular parts of the body manifest different X-ray absorption degrees. Bones, due to their high density, absorb more radiation than soft tissues (the liver, the kidneys). On the other hand, muscles, the adipose (fatty) tissue and internal organs allow free penetration of the X-rays. As a result, areas of higher density are visualised as light objects, soft tissues as dark/grey, whereas the air – as black.
The main indications for the X-ray scan of the knee joint include:
- pain in the knee(s);
- knee injuries resulting from increased physical activity;
- knee injuries resulting from a traffic accident;
- inflammatory lesions within the knee joint;
- suspected fracture of long bones;
- suspected ligament damage;
- degenerative lesions within the knee joint;
- genetic defects within the knee joint;
- developmental lesions within the knee joint;
- suspected fracture or dislocation of the patella (kneecap);
- inflammatory lesions within tendons;
- rheumatoid arthritis;
- neoplastic lesions within the knee joint;
- knee instability.
