Breast ultrasound
Breast ultrasound is used to assess the structure of the mammary gland, the presence of any pathological lesions and the width of the lactiferous ducts.
The examination helps identify cysts and fibroadenomas. Breast ultrasound is usually a complementary examination to mammography or is performed in the case of young women with high density of glandular tissue that impedes mammographic assessment.
Breast ultrasound – when should it be performed?
Indications for breast ultrasound are:
- breast pain;
- a palpable lesion in the breast;
- discharge from the nipple;
- follow-up examinations in relation to previously diagnosed benign lesions;
- family history of breast cancer;
- use of hormone replacement therapy.
Breast ultrasound is an imaging method involving ultrasonic waves. This technique is based on the phenomenon of reflection of an ultrasound beam against the structures of the organs. If you have undergone a mammogram and your doctor has recommended an additional examination, it advisable to make an appointment for breast ultrasound.
