Duplex Doppler ultrasound of the veins of the upper limbs is used to conduct the morphological and blood flow assessments in regard to the veins of the upper limbs.
Ultrasound of the veins of the upper limbs is performed:
in the case of suspected venous thrombosis;
in the diagnosis of upper-limb oedema;
in the case of chronic venous insufficiency;
in the case of congenital vascular malformations;
before and after surgery related to the venous system.
Doppler ultrasound uses the Doppler effect to assess the speed and direction of blood flow in vessels. The ultrasonic waves directed at the blood cells flowing in the blood vessels change frequency in proportion to the speed of the blood flow.
