The consultations are also recommended to women suffering from genital diseases and menstrual disorders, as well as women in the peri-menopausal period and those using contraception (or who wish to start doing so).

The best time to make an appointment for a gynaecological examination is in the first half of a menstrual cycle – not during menstruation.

The consultation and examination facilitate:

• assessment of the correctness of the structure of the reproductive organs;
• diagnosis of inflammatory conditions of the reproductive system;
• identification of causes of infertility and problems with carrying the child to term;
• determination of reasons behind the menstrual disorders;
• detection of lesions in the ovaries;
• determination of causes of genital bleeding;
• assessment of the condition of the cervix;
• detection of possible lesions in the cervix, ovaries and/or body of the uterus;
• selection of appropriate contraception;
• obtaining information about further prophylaxis of the reproductive system, including HPV vaccination.

The consultation with gynaecological ultrasound examination lasts 15 minutes.

Before the gynaecological examination, the doctor will need to obtain information from you regarding your health, medication you are taking and your history of illnesses and operations. Therefore, the doctor will ask you a number of questions, e.g. when was your last menstrual period, is your cycle regular, does vaginal discharge occur, have you been pregnant before, is there a family history of illnesses in women, etc. All this information is particularly important during your first visit to the gynaecologist. On the basis of this interview, the gynaecologist will decide which tests and examinations to carry out during the visit or which additional tests/examinations to order.

Gynaecological ultrasound is used to assess female reproductive organs and the structures of the small pelvis. The ultrasound enables the diagnosis of various abnormalities and the initiation of appropriate treatment.

The examination allows for the assessment of the organs in the small pelvis (reproductive organ as well as the mucous membrane of the uterine cavity, the cervix, the ovary, the body of the uterus, the rectouterine pouch).

The ultrasound procedure is based on the phenomenon of reflection of ultrasound waves against the structure of the organs – it is a non-invasive technique and the examination itself is safe and painless. Gynaecological ultrasound is performed using a transducer, each time protected by a latex protective cover with a special gel which enables the doctor to obtain a good quality image. The examination takes place in a gynaecological chair or couch, in a position that allows the pelvis to be elevated.

The gynaecological ultrasound examination as well as swab collection and cytology require appropriate preparation from the patient:

• preparation for gynaecological (transvaginal) ultrasound – to be attached
• preparation for cytology and swab collection – in the “Important information” tab

The patient is provided with the result of the gynaecological ultrasound examination in the form of an impression with the ultrasound image. All documents are printed during the appointment, so the patient receives the original version of the results.

The gynaecological ultrasound examination requires special preparation:

• The bladder must be empty.

The time of the examination is also important:

• patients of childbearing age: the best time for the examination is between days 5-10 of the cycle;
• postmenopausal patients taking HRT: the best time for the examination is between 6-10 days after taking the last tablet;
• postmenopausal patients taking sequential HRT: the best time for the examination is up to day 10 of the cycle;
• postmenopausal patients taking continuous HRT: the time of the examination is not significant.

How to prepare for cytology:

• Material for cytology is taken before the gynaecological examination, transvaginal ultrasound and other tests and examinations involving the vagina and/or the cervix, e.g. the collection of cultures.
• Cytology can be performed at the earliest 2 days after the end of menstruation and at the latest 4 days before the start of the next menstrual bleeding – preferably in the first half of the cycle.
• Within 4 days before the examination, it is not recommended to take vaginal medicines/preparations, use tampons or perform irrigation (vaginal lavage).
• It is necessary to refrain from sexual intercourse for at least 24 hours before the examination.
• 24 hours prior to cytology, the patient cannot undergo a gynaecological examination, transvaginal ultrasound, or the collection of cultures or swabs from the cervical canal.
• In the case of inflammation of the reproductive organs (which is often indicated by, among other things, vaginal discharge), such an inflammation should be treated before the examination can be performed.
