Symptoms of prostate cancer

Development of prostate cancer is usually latent – the disease in its early stages remains unnoticed, because it does not cause alarming symptoms. For this reason, prevention is very important – regular urological examinations, PSA tests and additional diagnostic examinations and tests (e.g. transrectal ultrasound) ordered by a doctor allow early detection of neoplasms.

Symptoms of prostate cancer may include genitourinary system problems, such as the following:

• difficulty urinating;
• frequent urination;
• the feeling of incomplete emptying of the bladder.

As patient’s health deteriorates and the cancer progresses, the following symptoms are also observed in patients:

• blood in the urine;
• burning during urination;
• abdominal pain;
• rectal pain and bleeding;
• erectile dysfunction.

Advanced prostate cancer can cause bone metastases. Sometimes the first symptom of cancer is bone pain caused by metastases.

In Poland, prostate cancer is a cause of slightly more than 8% of male deaths. Performing additional genetic tests allows to create an individual prevention plan and react to abnormalities even faster.

Genetic tests are particularly recommended for men at risk:

• if their next of kin had prostate, breast or ovarian cancer;
• if cancer developed early (50 to 60 years of age);
• if family members suffered from cancer involving multiple organs (thyroid, kidney, large intestine);
• if BRCA1, CHEK2 or NBS1 gene mutations were found in closest relatives.

The patient collects the material for genetic testing by themselves – a swab from the cheek mucosa. The test result depends primarily on the quality and quantity of DNA in the collected material.
