Total Calcium in Serum – Test Description
Calcium plays a crucial role in the proper functioning of the body. It is a primary building block of bones and teeth, is responsible for blood clotting, and also affects the nervous system and muscle function.
The test to assess calcium in the blood is very important. Early detection of calcium deficiencies can help prevent many serious diseases, such as osteoporosis or enzyme dysfunctions.
When Should You Test the Calcium Level in Blood?
The test to assess total calcium in serum is used, among other things, in the diagnosis of bone metabolism disorders. It is worth performing in cases of recurring muscle cramps, tingling and numbness in the limbs, heart rhythm disturbances, or blood clotting abnormalities.
Elevated calcium levels in blood can be observed in:
-
Hyperparathyroidism,
-
Hyperthyroidism,
-
Corticosteroid deficiencies,
-
Sarcoidosis and malignant tumors.
On the other hand, low calcium in serum occurs in:
-
Hypoparathyroidism,
-
Vitamin D metabolism disorders.
Total Calcium – How to Prepare for the Test?
For the calcium test, you should report on an empty stomach. Avoid eating for about 12 hours before the sample collection. It is also advisable to refrain from using stimulants and intense physical activity.
How is the Total Calcium Test Performed?
The calcium level test involves taking a blood sample into an EDTA tube. The process takes a few seconds to a minute. The best time to perform the test is in the morning.
Total Calcium in Serum – Results and Norms
The total calcium test will determine if the calcium level is within the normal range or if it falls outside of it. The normal range mainly depends on the patient’s age, and for an adult, it is 2.12–2.62 mmol/l (8.5–10.5 mg/dl). A result below the normal range indicates hypocalcemia, which may lead to weakened bones and fractures. A high calcium level in the blood indicates hypercalcemia, which may cause heart rhythm disturbances and lead to kidney stone formation. The test result is usually available within 3 business days and can be collected in person or online using an access password obtained at the clinic.
