What is magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)?

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive diagnostic method that uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create precise images of internal body structures. MRI provides very high-resolution images, allowing doctors to conduct a thorough analysis of the patient's health.

Types of MRI

The examination can cover different areas of the body. Some of the most commonly performed include:

Why is MRI performed?

MRI allows for the identification of many diseases, including:

  • brain tumors,
  • degenerative joint changes,
  • spinal injuries,
  • nervous system diseases,
  • heart diseases,
  • joint inflammation,
  • kidney diseases,
  • urinary system pathologies.

Contraindications for MRI

The main contraindications for MRI include:

  • pregnancy,
  • pacemaker (especially older models),
  • insulin pump,
  • intracranial metal clips,
  • implanted hearing aid,
  • neurostimulators.

Additionally, some people may have issues with claustrophobia, making the test very stressful and difficult for them. Another contraindication is an allergy to contrast agents used during the examination.

If a patient has any of the mentioned contraindications, it is essential to inform the medical staff before the examination begins. If MRI is not feasible, other diagnostic methods that may be safer and more effective for the individual can be considered.

FAQ

What is an MRI exam like?

During the exam, the patient lies on a special table that slides into the MRI machine’s cylindrical chamber. It is recommended to remain still to obtain sharp and readable images. While the body is being scanned, the patient may hear knocking or buzzing sounds, which are normal effects of the machine. Before the exam begins, the patient is given a signaling device to hold, which allows them to signal any problems and feel more at ease.

During the exam, the radiologist may decide to administer a contrast agent.

How to prepare for an MRI?

An MRI does not require special preparation. Patients should bring all relevant medical documentation. It is best to wear comfortable clothing without metal accessories. Before entering the MRI room, wallets with credit cards, phones, jewelry, and belts should be removed. For head and orbital MRIs, makeup and hair spray should not be used, as they may contain metal particles that can interfere with the results.

It is always a good idea to ask about the specific details of the examination at the facility where the MRI will be performed.

How long does an MRI take?

The entire procedure typically lasts from 15 to 90 minutes, depending on the area of the body being examined.
